Main works get underway on $900m new Melton Hospital
Foundation works have started to progress on the $900m new Melton Hospital in Victoria. These works include bulk excavation of rock and soil and trenching for underground services to be installed.
Supporting the communities of Caroline Springs, Rockbank, Melton, Bacchus Marsh and Gisborne, the new hospital site is 68,000 square metres, which is more than three times the size of the Melbourne Cricket Ground — a size that means there will be the potential to grow with the community, almost doubling capacity over time.
Once complete, the new Melton Hospital will have the capacity to treat 130,000 patients each year and will see almost 60,000 patients in the ED. Features of the new hospital include:
- at least 274 beds;
- a 24-hour ED;
- an intensive care unit;
- maternity and neonatal services;
- mental health services, radiology services and ambulatory care;
- a new education and training hub for doctors and nurses in Melbourne’s west.
Work at the site over the next six months will include: continuation of bulk excavation works, piling getting underway, establishment of retaining walls, concrete pours for the foundations of the new hospital, and the first tower crane arriving (later in the year).
Construction is expected to be complete in 2029.
