Craigieburn Community Hospital opens in Melbourne's northern suburbs
Run by Northern Health, Victoria’s new Craigieburn Community Hospital in Melbourne's northern suburbs officially opened on 20 August.
The new facility was built on the foundation of the Craigieburn Centre and is intended to ease pressure on nearby major hospitals, including Northern Hospital Epping, while giving local families access to a greater range of specialist care.
It will provide essential, everyday health services such as day surgery and public dental care, alongside new services that went live the week of its opening. These include:
- Antenatal Clinic
- Audiology
- Paediatric Development Clinic
- Paediatric Feeding Clinic
- Pre-Term Birth Clinic
- UV Skin Treatment
Additional services — including a Lung Cancer Screening Program (Radiology) and an Insulin Pump Clinic — will commence from October, with more to follow in 2026.
“This is more than just the opening of a new facility — it represents the next stage in our journey with this community,” Northern Health Chief Executive Debra Bourne said on the significance of the hospital’s opening. “The transition from the Craigieburn Centre to the Craigieburn Community Hospital is more than symbolic. It reflects our continued and longstanding commitment to the people of Craigieburn and surrounding suburbs.”
As small public hospitals, Victoria’s community hospitals provide a range of everyday health services and are intended to help take pressure off major hospitals and allow more people to manage their health needs closer to home.
Located in some of the state’s biggest-growing suburbs, community hospitals have been designed so that services can increase as the population grows.
Those who live near Craigieburn Community Hospital can access the hospital services through a referral from their GP or healthcare provider.
