Supervision: The Bionic Lens that offers Better Eyesight
Tuesday, 26 May, 2015
You may have seen the news about the Bionic Lens offering wearers better than 20/20 vision without risk of deterioration or interference from cataracts over time. You won’t even have to bother with refilling contacts prescriptions or even leaving them in overnight - these non-degradable contact lenses are permanent and you won’t even feel them.
Canadian company Ocumentrics is offering an subretinal prosthesis which simply put, is an implant that is inserted behind the retina - in a procedure not dissimilar to cataract removal surgery.
This particular technology has been under development for eight years however researchers all over the world have been working on similar products, including Australia’s very own version produced by the Bionics Institute, the home of the Cochlear Ear.
In 2013 the Bionics Institute ran human trials of their Bionic Eye with patients suffering from retinitis pigmentosa (a vision condition that renders the patient legally blind). A participant described the sensation of switching on the visual prosthesis for the first time:
“I didn’t know what to expect, but all of a sudden, I could see a little flash...it was amazing. Every time there was stimulation there was a different shape that appeared in front of my eye,” Ms Ashworth said.
