PERSON-CENTERED CONTINENCE CARE: Seeking realistic outcomes

Seminar overview

Continence problems are a central issue for the majority of frail older people. These problems can have a significant effect on their quality of life but people are often reluctant to raise the issue. Common reasons for not talking about this issue with health professionals include: it is difficult for an adult to say ‘I wet or soil my pants’ it is seen as part of getting old and nothing can be done about it, or it is not a big enough problem to bother health professionals about. In addition some older people mistakenly believe they will be placed into residential care because of their incontinence. For all of these reasons it can be difficult for health professionals in both community and residential setting to get good enough data to plan and provide continence care that is person centred where the individual is an active partner in the process.

Purpose of the seminar

The seminar will explore in depth the issues surrounding continence care management and strategies to enhance the individual’s health and quality of life outcomes. The discussion and exploration will be most pertinent to COMMUNITY CARE settings.

Seminar details

The seminar will specifically explore:

  • Overview of incontinence and person centred care

  • Living with incontinence

  • Focus on key components of a continence assessment – getting the data to make informed clinical decisions for continence management

  • Strategies that promote and maintain continence – an often forgotten component of care

  • Common management strategies

  • Toileting programs what is best practice?

  • Continence aids selection - speed dating with the product companies to get to know the products

  • Specific management for nocturia, urgency and recurrent UTIs

DEPRESSION & ANXIETY DISORDERS IN OLDER PEOPLE

Seminar overview

Recently, the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) confirmed the rate of depression in residential aged care at 34.7 per cent. Prevalence rates for anxiety disorders are as yet unconfirmed but believed to be higher than depression. NARI also confirmed the rates for community dwelling older people which are more in line with general prevalence rates. However, rates for frail older people in the community who require significant supports are twice that of less frail older people. These startling statistics form the basis for this seminar on depression and anxiety disorders in older people. This seminar will detail the latest evidence around depression and anxiety disorders as well as the latest screening, management and treatment of depression and anxiety disorders in older people. Also, there will be an exploration of how we can boost the mental health of older people accessing residential or community services.

Target audience

Senior nursing, allied health and clinical staff working with older adults in acute, residential or home/ community care settings.

Seminar details

The seminar will specifically explore:

  • Getting on the same page in terms of meanings/definitions

  • Facts/figures, prevalence, trends, relevant research

Understanding depression and anxiety disorders in older people

  • Let’s look at the specifics and issues for this age group

  • What do we know? How should this instruct our professional practice?

  • How can we be more proactive

  • Education - clients and colleagues
