Food packaging contest awards innovation

The inaugural Save Food Packaging Awards for Australia and New Zealand have announced the winner of the Food Services Category as SPC ProVital Easy-Open Portion Control Fruit Cup. The Food Service Category recognises companies which are developing innovative and sustainable packaging that minimises food losses and food waste, extends shelf life and improves the supply of food.
The Save Food Packaging Awards are a global program that have been developed by the World Packaging Organisation, in conjunction with Messe Dusseldorf and Interpack, and are designed to recognise companies who are developing innovative and sustainable packaging that minimises food losses and food waste, extends shelf life and improves the supply of food.
“The ... easy-open cup represents SPC's commitment to being at the forefront of packaging accessibility improvements in healthcare, where it has been estimated that patient malnutrition can be as high as 40%,” said Mark Connolly, General Manager Marketing at SPC.
“Easy-open packaging not only contributes to improved nutritional outcomes for patients, it can play a role in reducing food waste and, most importantly, it restores a patient’s independence and dignity as they are able to perform simple task themselves like opening their food without having to ask for help or go without.”
The SPC ProVital range was specifically designed in collaboration with NSW Health– also Highly Commended in the Food Services category at the Save Food Packaging Awards for My Food Choice - and healthcare professionals and partner organisations including Passport Design, Amcor, Visy Food Plastics, Molenaar, LeMac, Labelmakers, Arthritis Australia and the Institute of Bone and Joint Research.
A key purpose of the Save Food Packaging Awards is to raise awareness of the critical role of packaging in reducing food waste resulting in a positive overall environmental impact.
The Australia and NZ winners and High Commendations will be formally recognised and displayed as a part of the global Save Food Packaging Program that will coincide with Interpack 2017
