Ebola Death Count Rises, Health Workers Hit Hard
Monday, 01 December, 2014
While it was widely reported last week that the Ebola virus had killed 5674, those numbers have since been revised due to uncounted cases from Liberia.
The death toll now stands at about 7000, with a total of 16169 infected with the disease. The number of death cases in Liberia make up the majority of deaths tallied, at 4181.
According to a report by the ABC, health workers have been one of the worst groups hit, with 340 of 592 cases proving fatal.
In more positive news, neither Nigeria nor Senegal have reported new cases in 57 days, and both countries have been declared Ebola-free. However, the United Nations said that efforts to contain the virus have fallen behind schedule.
Oxfam Australia's Helen Szoke said that for this reason, Australia must provide more support.
"As a country, we must remain open to sending additional personnel," she said.
Australia's commitment to fighting the virus is continuing, with 100-bed Aspen Medical facility in Sierra Leone set to be completed in coming weeks.
