Denise Lyons is the new APNA President
Denise Lyons is the new President of the Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA), replacing Karen Booth — who, to ensure a smooth handover, will remain on the board until the end of her final term in 2026.
An experienced registered nurse and endorsed nurse practitioner with more than three decades of experience, Lyons is originally from the US, where she worked in EDs and paediatric wards for several years before earning a Master in Health Promotion. Lyons has worked in the Australian primary health care system for the past 28 years, in general practice.
“As I look ahead, I see both challenges and opportunities. Healthcare systems are under pressure everywhere because of workforce shortages, rising costs and aging populations,” Lyons said.
“But this is also a chance to reshape how we deliver care and how we value the role of nurses, putting them at the frontline of these transformations.”
In a statement on the appointment, APNA acknowledged Karen Booth’s 16 years as president. “She has been a persistent advocate for primary healthcare nurses and a stronger healthcare system in Australia,” APNA said. “Under Karen’s leadership, Australia better understands the value of strong primary healthcare nursing and has helped nurses feel valued, visible and respected.”
Vice President Christine Fuller is returning for another term, it was also announced, as are board members Lisa Chalmers and Sharon James. “The continuity of experienced board members alongside new leadership puts APNA in a strong position to continue advocating for our members and the 98,000 primary healthcare nurses in Australia,” APNA said.
