Draft National Health and Medical Research Strategy — consultations open
The draft of a 10-year plan for Australia’s first national health and medical research strategy has been released by the Australian Government, with feedback on the draft strategy being sought from the research community through submissions, webinars, workshops and roundtables, to help shape the final strategy.
Aiming to accelerate the federal government’s plan to transform health and medical research and place Australia at the forefront of global health and medical innovation, Rosemary Huxtable is Chair of the strategy, the draft having been developed in close consultation with the health and medical research sector.
“This strategy will not only enable bold and transformative ideas but also strengthen our global leadership in health and medical research,” said Australia’s Minister for Health, Disability and Ageing, Mark Butler. “I encourage members of the Australian health and medical research community to review and provide feedback to Ms Huxtable on the draft strategy to ensure it reflects their vision and priorities.”
Research Australia, the national peak body for the health and medical research sector, welcomed the 27 August draft release. “From the very beginning of this process, Research Australia has been actively calling for a strategy that doesn’t just sit on a shelf. So we are very pleased to see the focus on governance structures, implementation and evaluation frameworks included in the draft strategy released today,” Research Australia CEO Nadia Levin said.
Research Australia also reiterated the call that the strategy must be developed in partnership with other national reform processes, such as the Strategic Examination of Research and Development, National Research Infrastructure Roadmap, Clinical Trials Reform Agenda and HTA Review.
The draft strategy is available here, via the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing website.
You can submit a response to the draft strategy here, via the consultation hub for the Draft National Health and Medical Research Strategy. Consultations close 8 October.
