[hr]Healthcare design’s first priority is to prevent infection. The surfaces you specify play a critical role in helping you create safer healthcare environments.[hr]
DuPont Corian® solid surfaces help healthcare specifiers create spaces that, with proper cleaning, do not support the growth of bacteria or fungi.
DuPont Corian® solid surface meets the high expectations of the most demanding healthcare environments. With unlimited potential for Nurses stations, baby and birthing baths, corridor hallways, operating room walls, showers, and more, Corian® is:

Corian® Birthing Baths at Canberra Women’s and Children’s Hospital
In 2012, Stage 1 of the hospital expansion brought together several services under one roof. Within the maternity area, fibreglass birthing baths were introduced. Over time these baths proved not to perform as well as expected and a new specification was required for the refurbishment of the original maternity building in Stage 2.
After much research and testing, 8 Corian® birthing baths were installed in 2013, as part of the Birthing Centre’s Stage 2 development.
“It is quite innovative for a hospital to put birthing baths within the rooms. Our initial choice was the fibreglass baths, but we have learnt important lessons and in stage 2 were able to select a bath more suitable for our needs.” Says Penny Maher, Assistant Director, Midwifery.
Corian® was chosen for the following reasons:

  • Infection control – Does not harbour germs or bacteria

  • Reliable brand

  • Durable, stable surface that is non abrasive

  • Ease of maintenance - Doesn’t breakdown with strict cleaning processes and can withstand bleach and scrubbing

  • Baths are designed and made locally in Australia

Benefits for patients:
The rooms themselves are appealing and with the birthing baths look more like a spa in a hotel room than a hospital - not clinical.
The baths themselves have welcoming appeal; they always look shiny and new and are comfortable, warm and soft for the mother. The Corian® material helps maintain water temperature, and the baths are sturdy and spacious providing enough room for the partner to join the mother in the bath, or to facilitate a water birth – if this is safe and the choice of the mother.
The user friendly design features steps into the bath, and also a step inside the bath with non-slip surface that can be used for kneeling or sitting.
